Pack 306

Rutland Massachusetts Scouting

Hello there and welcome,

This is just a note to let you know how you and your family can assist your Cub Scout in the Den and Pack. This will probably help answer any questions that you may have.

Your son is on his Wolf /Bear Trail Journey.  The den is anticipating that all the boys will have the achievements completed for Wolf /Bear Badge by the Blue and Gold Banquet in February.

The Blue and Gold Banquet is a celebration of the birth date of the Scouting movement in the USA, February 8th 1910.  It is a really great time, we anticipate having a lot of fun while awarding many boys their badges that they have strived for during the year.  It’s a time when your extended family can applaud your son’s accomplishments.  You will hear more about this as the year progresses.

After the boys have earned their badge of rank, they may earn Arrow Point Electives, which are located in the back of their books.  The boys may work on these Electives at any time, whether in the den or at home.  You or the den leader signs off on it.  It is important that you let your son’s leader know that the electives were completed so your son will get credit.  It is only after the boy has earned the badge of rank that he may be awarded the arrow point(s).   The first ten electives earn a gold point; silver points are awarded after each ten following.  Electives may be completed more than once.

There are some requirements that can be covered in the den meetings, but there are some that need to be done with you at home.  Each week the leader will inform you which achievement the den worked on and ask you to help your son during the week at home and sign off in his book under the achievement on Akela’s OK.  The boys may have a slip of paper in the chapter that they had worked on reminding him to work with the family at home.  Please ask your son what he had done within the meeting.  It helps reinforce what was covered as well as having him share his experience with you.

It is important that your son try to bring his book to every meeting so the leader can record what the boys have done at home and so they can follow along during the meeting.  They gain a great sense of accomplishment when their books are signed off.

Pack meetings are held once a month, typically the last Friday at 7PM at Central Tree Middle School, unless Holidays or vacations interfere.  We ask that you try to make as many as possible with your son.  Pack meetings are a chance for the boys to see what other dens are doing and for them to be honored by receiving their awards.  We ask that you help us by speaking to your son about proper meeting behavior.  Being on time helps immensely; we strive to be timely in the meeting, as we know that everyone is stretched for time.  The format is that the boys arrive and form to march in behind the Flag.  Above all Pack Meetings should be fun for everyone.

Cub Scouting is a family activity.  The Wolf and Bear programs are structured to give the boys a well-rounded base of knowledge.  The Achievements range from art, woodworking, song, health, Faith to sport and fitness.  The program is fun and educational.  Thanks for supporting your son and the Pack.  We look forward to seeing your son advance throughout the year!

Sincerely,
